The district environmental chairman is responsible to reinforce and encourage efforts that preserve and renew the natural resources of earth, air, water, and living creatures, thereby improving the quality of life. The chairman seeks to awaken interest in individual Lions and clubs in order to motivate them to positive action. The chairman should convey to members that such activities fulfill the values of the second and sixth Lions Clubs International Objects: “To promote the principles of …good citizenship” and “To encourage service-minded people to serve their community.”
· Become familiar with the chairman guide to environment and the environmental activities page on the Lions Clubs International Web site. Identify activities that will work in your district.
· Collaborate on projects with other district chairmen, especially cultural and community activities, membership, leadership, extension, and public relations.
· Work closely with club presidents and club environmental services chairmen. Visit their clubs, discuss the urgency of protecting our natural resources, and solicit feedback and suggestions. Work as a team to develop an outline for your year’s plan.
· Meet with the governor, vice governor, district cabinet members, zone and region chairmen, district chairmen, and other Lion leaders to fashion and build consensus for a coordinated plan for the year.
· Support and publicize ongoing environmental activities.
· Encourage and help organize a new awareness of the environment.
· Organize the Environment Award for your district.
· Keep your governor and the international office informed of your district’s environmental activities. Provide a summary report to your successor.
